When it comes to all things quintessentially British, recreational pastimes like afternoon tea and fashion powerhouse Burberry quickly spring to mind. So it’s hardly surprising that nestled within Burberry’s flagship store on Regent Street, is Thomas’s, a cafe, a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle along one of the city’s busiest shopping streets.

Opened in 2015, Thomas’s is a welcome addition to the W1 neighbourhood. Relatively unknown to many of London’s locals and visitors alike, it’s a sanctuary whose rivals are iconic department stores like Liberty and Harrods, and upmarket hotels like Claridges, The Savoy or the nearby Hotel Café Royal who offer similar respite.

Access to Thomas’s is via the in-store elevator or its separate entrance on Vigo Street, this all-day café provides an oasis of calm respite from the crowds and chaos of Regent Street.

The Food

We stopped by Thomas’s for afternoon tea. Sparkling rose on arrival, we were presented with a comprehensive tea menu which was consistently refilled throughout. An hourglass accompanies the glass teapot, indicating the perfect steeping time for your chosen blend.

Afternoon tea is presented on a rectangle bronze and glass tiered tea tray. A selection of crustless finger sandwiches, a tray of petite sweet cakes, and a choice from the aga; teacake, crumpets, or scones.  We opted for warmed scones served with handmade bespoke Burberry preserves and deliciously decadent clotted cream.

Thomas’s is open for breakfast which has a tempting menu buttermilk pancakes, porridge and fruit. Hot options that tempt me more, a traditional fry up, salmon and scrambled eggs, but it’s the lobster benedict and the poached eggs on crushed avocado which has me desperate to return to Thomas’s.

  1. […] I’ve lived in many countries, but my earliest memories come from living in England. We lived in the small town of Ipswich, which was near the air base where both my father and mother worked. I went to a private primary school that’s not there any more, but I can tell you that in the fresh, misty mornings of winter I can remember getting out of the car and smelling the tummy pleasing smell of sausages, or bangers, being grilled. I didn’t then, and still don’t really love sausages, but I do love the smell. Bangers and mash are still on the menu in most places as are Shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, and Toad in the Hole, and then there’s always afternoon tea. […]

  2. Looks delish! I had no idea that this place existed and love that you can take a shopping break and pop in for a good tea.
