Pot smokers, prostitutes and a canal or two is what most people know Amsterdam is famous for. But let me tell you its so much more.
Landing in Amsterdam on an icy cold day, I found myself taking my premier Segway tour as a part of a surprise birthday gift. After a decent introduction to Segwaying I quickly found myself flying along the cobblestones at a brisk, and initially unnerving, 20mi/hour. But as the ice and snow began to whip my face I began to care less about falling off and more concerned about what I couldn’t see ahead!
As night fell and the cold set in (along with the rain) the distinct lack of a waterproof jacket was now a growing concern. I caved and decided to wear an ’emergency poncho’. Unflattering to the maximum but it kept me (mostly) dry. Temps plummeting below zero, this sun-seeking Aussie was more than frozen to the core!
After 30 minutes of whizzing around I felt like a professional. I think learning to Segway in Amsterdam is better than most cities, as drivers are more used to cyclists and significantly more cycle ways. Most pedestrians can’t hear you approaching so I found myself frequently using my bell to alert passes by of my presence and the added aid of a light was always reassuring.
I have a distinct lack of Segway photos due to the weather, but I saw lots! Museumplein, the house of Anne Frank and as always, the little interesting facts along the way.
I’d like to thank Best Dam Segway Tours for an insightful introductory tour to Amsterdam!
