Yet another item checked off the Bucket List!
They’re the icon of British music. Everyone knows The Beatles. They weren’t in my generation but we all know the names Lennon, McCartney, that weird one with the glasses ‘Ringo’ & ‘the other one’, George was it? Call them what you want, but The Beatles were legendary.
So other than traipsing to Liverpool to retrace their steps I thought I’d start with the infamous crossing on the cover of the Abbey Road album.
Abbey Road is in St John’s Wood in North London (NW8 9BT). It’s still a very popular road and (oddly) it hasn’t been closed off to the public. So weekends are filled with tourists attempting to recreate that famous image while dodging taxis, buses and disgruntled locals quickly losing their patience with a popular pedestrian crossing.
Navigating to the crossing is very easy, about a 10 min stroll from the St John’s Wood tube station.
I’m a firm believer of ‘when in Rome’, so of course I walked the walk. Well, I tried to. I had a close call with a bus and a Jaguar driver wasn’t too impressed with my dawdling pace. This is the remnants of me walking the Abbey Road crossing.
You can see the state of the crossing on the publicly accessible webcam: http://www.abbeyroad.com/crossing
If you want to go, don’t do it on a sunny weekend day. It’s utter chaos, but other than that, enjoy. It’s one of the rare things in London that’s free.
