I do love it when a friend says, ‘let me take you to one of London’s hidden treasures’… Who am I to say no?!
I never imagined that I would discover an authentic Thai restaurant near Hyde Park inside the Lancaster London, a 4 star property that fronts the park. Awarded two AA rosettes for their food, Nipa seats 55 and serves traditional Thai cuisine along with warm and welcoming service. Decorated with classic yet subtle Thai decor of wood panelling and orchids, it’s possible to forget where you are until you spot the stunning landscape of Hyde Park through the huge glass panels that pour natural light into the restaurant.
Unable to make a definitive decision for starters, we opt for the sharing platter, Ruam Mitr. Included on the platter are satay chicken skewers which paired nicely with a peanut sauce and cucumber relish, deliciously crispy fried prawn dumplings, Por Pia Tod, crispy spring rolls filled with crab meat, glass noodles and cabbage and Tod Mun Pla, traditional Thai fishcakes. I’ve always been a big fan of rice paper so I was thrilled to see Kao Krieb Pak Moh on the menu, chicken, shallot and peanut wrapped in rice paper topped with coriander, fresh chillies and crisp iceberg lettuce.
All of this was accompanied with various dipping sauces; peanut satay, chilli & cucumber, sweet plum, sweet chilli mixed with crushed peanut.
There are an array of options on the menu for mains. I opted for Mia Fa Rang Phad Hoy Shell, plump and juicy scallops lightly stir-fried with asparagus while my dining companion opted for a fiery stir fry of prawns with chillies and basil leaves.
For sides we opted for Phad Phak Ruam Mitr, a vegetarian stir fry of mixed vegetables and Kao Suay, Thai Jasmine white rice.
I’ll admit after all this I was ready to loosen my belt a notch or two, but when the dessert menu came around I couldn’t say no.
While I simply couldn’t manage the heavy deep fried banana topped with honey and vanilla ice cream, my dining companion put a dint in that! I was intrigued by the Ka Nom Mali, a Jasmine cheesecake paired with a tart and zesty elderflower sorbet. I found the sorbet refreshing and it complimented the mint chocolate garnish and raspberry coulis. In keeping with the experience, it was all beautifully presented and garnished with fresh flowers.
The Verdict
Nipa is great option for those seeking an affordable Thai restaurant near Hyde Park which provides top quality meals with fresh ingredients flown in from Thailand twice a week.
In addition to à la carte and set menus, Nipa offers a two course pre-theatre menu including beer or wine for an astonishingly affordable £24pp.
Nipa also currently accepts Gourmet Society and tastecard for 25% off your bill.
