Where is Ravenna, Italy?

First and foremost, Ravenna is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northeastern Italy, one of our favourite and most visited regions in Italy. It is 90 miles (145 km) south of the city of Venice. Driving from Venice to Ravenna will take 2.5 hours.

Ravenna is a historically significant city.  It was the residence of western Roman emperors, Ostrogoth kings, and Byzantine governors. It is often referred to as the “city of mosaics” because it is home to some of the most significant and well-preserved examples of Byzantine mosaics in the world. These mosaics are renowned for their artistic beauty, historical significance, and the intricate craftsmanship involved in creating them.

If you have spare time before/after your cruise, visitors to Ravenna can marvel at the stunning mosaics found in its eight UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites.

Why are cruise ships now using Venice (Ravenna) terminal?

In a bid to preserve the artistic, cultural and environmental heritage of Venice, the Italian Government announced a ban on large cruise ships in the historic area.

Effective 1 August 2021, ships weighing more than 25,000 tonnes will no longer pass St Mark’s Square or share the space with gondolas and water taxis in the city centre.

RCI-Royal Caribbean cruises will instead depart from Ravenna cruise terminal.

Taxi

The most expensive option is a private transfer or a taxi.

This is one of the most convenient ways to travel from Ravenna train station to Porto Corsini, the cruise terminal. Taxis are readily available outside the train station, and the ride to the cruise terminal is relatively short. This option provides door-to-door service, ensuring a hassle-free journey. However, keep in mind that taxi fares can vary, so it’s a good idea to confirm the approximate cost before getting in.

Shuttle Service

Some cruise lines and private companies offer shuttle services specifically designed to transport cruise passengers between the train station and the cruise terminal, which are generally not included in your cruise and attract an additional cost.

These shuttles typically run during peak cruising season which provide a convenient and reliable transfer option. It’s wise to book in advance

Public Bus

How do I get my bags to the cruise terminal?

The good news is that Bus 90 has a small storage compartment at the bottom of the bus which the driver will open upon boarding. Based on our experience, you’ll be sharing the bus with fellow cruise passengers so the storage compartment will fill up quickly. Our advice is if you’re travelling with smaller carry-on size luggage then just take it with you on board the bus and place it on an empty seat near you.

Whilst the Bus 90 we took during peak season in July was busy, there were still plenty of spare seats on board so we didn’t struggle with finding a space for our bags during the journey to Porto Corsini.

  1. Thank you for the information. It helped get us from the train station to the cruise port. We traveled in August, which may be a bit more crowded. We had to jam onto the route 90 bus like sardines with all of our luggage. The bus driver offered no storage under the bus for anyone’s luggage. On the plus side, because the bus was full of cruise passengers, the driver only stopped at one stop to let one local guy off. If you’re taking this bus be prepared it may be packed!

    1. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, Dan, We appreciate it. We’re happy to hear that this post help with your recent cruise. Oh it sounds like visit in August was considerably more crowded than during our trip and it must have been a challenge with not being offered storage under the bus! Thanks for sharing your recent experience with us, it is much appreciated. Hopefully this will help future travellers with what to expect when catching the bus in August. Thanks, Russell

  3. Hi! It’s our first time on a cruise. Do you happen to know also how can we get transportation from Port Corsini back to Ravenna Train Station? Are there taxis or busses waiting at the port? If yes, do we need to book them ahead of time? Really need your help.

    1. Hi, Sheryl. Great to hear you’re setting off on your first cruise, you must be really excited! You ask a good question and it’s a little difficult for us to answer because we departed Porto Corsini but arrived in Athens so we didn’t take the bus back to the train station. However, we’ve had a look at the bus schedule for a journey from Porto Corsini back to Ravenna train station and it looks like it can be done on the same bus 90. Here’s the official timetable PDF from the Start Romagna website which might be helpful – https://www.startromagna.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Start_Libretto_Ravenna_estivo_23_agg.31.7.23.pdf – and it’s page 87-87 that you’d be most interested in.
