If you’re looking for an upscale yet affordable hotel in Philly with an incredible location right in the heart of the historic Old City district, then the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District should be on your list.
The atmosphere is homely with iconic images of Philadelphia created by a local artist featured throughout the hotel with a stylish decor of a neutral colour palette with accents of blue and grey to give it a polished edge.

The Rooms
Acquired by the Wyndham Hotels and Resorts in 2013, the hotel has 364 rooms in a variety of layouts. Rooms are available in double queen or king configurations plus seven junior suites for those looking for a bit more space. Rooms are then divided into categories, deluxe or premium, the latter which includes a microwave and a small fridge.
Our room was a deluxe double queen room with large windows facing towards the city. I found myself starting each day with a fresh cup of coffee from the in-room machine while watching the world go by from the comfy reading chair beside the window.
Rooms also have an executive desk from which you can comfortably work should you find yourself with some extra time, or as in my case, a place to edit photos at 4am when the jet lag kicks in! The all-important bathroom was a shower over bath configuration with a large vanity. Kitted out with Blue Harmony miniature toiletries and plenty of fresh towels.
The wardrobe contains timber coat hangers that refreshingly aren’t secured to the rail. Iron and board plus an digital in-room safe to keep your passport and other valuables.
For the millennial traveller power points and WiFi are very important and the good news is that the WiFi is free for guests and consistent in both bandwidth and speed. We generally travel with a power strip/board board to avoid any arguments over whose device gets charged first, but no need at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District as they’ve thought of everything and acquired lamps for the bedside and desk that have inbuilt power points.
Restaurant & Bar
The Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District has an onsite bar and restaurant, Coins, the name is an homage to the US Mint which is nearby. Open to both hotel guests and visitors, the menu is a relatively standard affair of American comfort food and regional cuisine with numerous beers on tap and wines available by the glass. It’s ideal if you want a night cap or a quick snack.
Also available for guests is a ‘Grab & Go’, a mini shop located just off reception offering microwavable meals, snacks and drinks which is handy for late arriving guests after the hotel restaurant has closed.
Breakfast is served on the ground floor at Coins. Included in some rates, breakfast is an extensive buffet of hot and cold options. Featuring the usual suspects of scrambled eggs, sausage, potato, bacon, fruit and a selection of pastries.

Location
The hotel is perfectly located in Philadelphia’s Old City, just short walk to many of Philly’s popular landmarks, including Constitution Centre, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall. A bit further afield but still walkable is Philly’s Convention Center, the Barnes Foundation, Rodin Museum, US Mint, Rittenhouse Square, and Penn’s Landing making it entirely feasible to pop back to the hotel for an afternoon nap or to change before heading out to dinner.
Located just off reception is an on-site ATM, the perfect opportunity to to grab some cash before spending it all at Reading Terminal Market, which is just a 15 minute walk to from the hotel, a great place to stop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Fitness Centre & Pool
The Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District has a well equipped fitness centre which is located on the ground floor.
Providing an assortment of new cardio machines including treadmills, cross trainers, stationary bike. There is also machine weights, plus a dedicated space for free weights and benches. With big windows and lots of natural light, it’s open 24/7 for guests.
One of the few outdoor pools in Philly’s city centre, the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District offers a rooftop pool which operates seasonally from 10am to 10pm. With lounge chairs, it’s a little sanctuary where guests can settle in and soak in the sights of the Philly skyline. Unfortunately it was closed for the winter during our visit, it’s certainly somewhere I would retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a a dip with a view of the city skyline.
The Staff
The staff of a hotel is always a pressure point of mine, as you know, we travel A LOT and we’ve had shockingly bad service at some hotels and spectacular stand out experiences at others. The common denominator across our superb experiences has been those establishments where the staff love what they do. These staff live and breathe the core values of the hotel which positively influences every guest interaction. It was this exact type of experience we had at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District which made our stay an absolute delight.
We met with Romina, Director of Group Sales, who was knowledgeable and clearly passionate about her job. Reception staff greeted us daily and no request was too much trouble. It’s the little things that can make or break your stay, and having umbrellas on hand to battle Philadelphia’s temperamental weather was exactly what we needed. No request was too big or too much trouble for the Wyndham team.
Parking
The Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District has their own parking which is key for guests and visitors. With easy access to highway and proximity to leisure and locations like Atlantic City (60 mins) and less than two hours to New York City. More locally, the hotel is close to Penns Landing and the riverfront with ice skating in winter.
Meeting rooms
With ten meeting rooms and flexible space configurations, the hotel has plenty of space to host business meetings, conferences, wedding receptions, and special events for up to 500 people.
